OPEN HOUSE & CLINICAL PRESENTATION

OPEN TO THOSE CONSIDERING POSTGRADUATE TRAINING

THIS TEST CANNOT BE GRADED: AN ANXIOUS, HIGH-ACHIEVING STUDENT LEARNS TO TOLERATE AMBIVALENCE
SATURDAY, JUNE 22, 2024
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

“I feel guilty even telling them that what they are doing causes me stress. They’ve done so much for me to get here. It feels ungrateful.” - Patient E.

This presentation explores three years of psychoanalytic psychotherapy with a socially anxious teenage girl named E. who is struggling to live up to her parents' exacting expectations. E.'s progression from the paranoid-schizoid position toward the depressive position from an object relations perspective will be illuminated. Throughout the presentation, we will reflect on the interventions that the analyst used to support E. in tolerating and mourning ambiguity. Challenges the therapist and E. faced in their work together in terms of countertransference and enactments will be examined as well as how the therapist navigated those challenges with the aid of supervision during the time she was a candidate in MITPP's Child and Adolescent Program. For those considering postgraduate training, a window into what offering psychoanalytic psychotherapy to teens with anxiety looks like on a practical level will be highlighted.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will:
1. learn the basics of object relations.
2. gain an understanding of how countertransference and enactments challenge psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic work.
3. understand what psychoanalytic psychotherapy with teens looks like.

PRESENTER: Poesis Silagan-Bush, LCSW Certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Child & Adolescent Program. Therapist: Hope Hearth Therapy. Established Hope Hearth Therapy.

TREATING THE REGRESSED PATIENT: A TWO-SESSION CLINICAL WORKSOP
Instructor: Alma Ismailgeci, LMSW
This workshop will examine the treatment of regressed patients predominantly through focusing on clinical work with a woman in her mid-forties who entered therapy with communications that were primarily non-verbal. The patient presented herself as if she were a young child, analogous to the time when she actually was a small child and had wishes for a union with her mother. These wishes included the desire to cut off from the world, and to reconnect with her mother in the womb. The instructor will demonstrate how transference, countertransference and resistance were at play. In this workshop, she will illustrate the techniques she used and how she managed the treatment of this regressed patient as she considers its general implications. Participants will: a) understand techniques used to working addressing patient’s primarily non-verbal communication, b) learn how a therapist can provide a mirroring experience and maintain neutrality, and understand the transference, countertransference and resistance in treatment, c) understand a patient’s feeling of omnipotence, and her intertwined picture with self, family and others related to sex and money.

USING A PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC APPROACH TO BUILD UPON THE INNER WORLDS OF NEURODIVERGENT CLIENTS: AN INTEGRATIVE APPROACH
Instructor: Po Silagan-Bush, LCSW
Is Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy right for my neurodivergent client? This workshop will engage with this question by exploring where Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy fits into the current discourse about appropriate treatments for clients with Autism and ADHD. We will break down how engaging with clients' special interests is more than just rapport building. Rather it plays a critical role from the object relations and attachment perspectives. Finally, we will examine the importance of taking an adaptive approach that integrates mindfulness when working with neurodivergent clients. Participants will understand Autism and ADHD from a strengths-focused Psychoanalytic Psychotherapeutic Perspective, understand how delving into the symbolic meaning behind clients' special interests leads to therapeutic growth and learn how to use clients' special interests to integrate mindfulness into Psychoanalytic Psychotherapeutic treatment.

WINNICOTTIAN APPROACH TO UNDERSTANDING AND TREATING EARLY TRAUMA
Instructor: Shelly Ostro, Ph.D., LP
One of Winnicott’s great contributions to the psychoanalytic practice and theory, is his focus on the very early stage of our mental life, with its unique characteristics and demands. He was able to put into words and describe the intensity of the dyad’s (a baby and a mother) experiences, anxieties and needs at this early stage - all of which are not yet symbolized or at the very beginning of the symbolization process. In this mini-course, we will learn about his ideas regarding the meaning of trauma (impingement) at this early stage - the ways it affects the budding psyche; how the psyche organizes in response in order to survive; and what are some later manifestations of these ways of surviving in the adult psyche. In addition, we will talk about his notion of regression to dependency in analysis as the answer he found to allow for a therapeutic contact with these early traumas. Participants will learn about Winnicott’s ideas regarding early trauma and its effect on the developing sense of self. We will use both Winnicott’s theoretical papers and clinical vignettes, be introduced to Winnicott’s ideas regarding regression to dependency in the analysis of the adult patient as a viable way to work with early trauma.

WHAT IS BORDERLINE PSYCHOPATHOLOGY?
Instructor: Gene Yellin, LCSW
This workshop will break down the core psychological concepts which anchor the complex and sometimes confusing diagnosis called “borderline.” The usefulness of the label is not just as a set of symptoms but is better understood as a part of object relations theory, with clear relevance to clinical work. Participants will be able to delineate the core concepts which comprise the field of “borderline,” demystify and understand why an entire literature in psychoanalytic theory and technique has emerged under the heading called “borderline,” and connect the theory of borderline psychopathology to practical clinical work.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE (HOW CAN I HELP)
Instructor: Thomas McCoy, M.Div., LCSW
Saying “Thank You for Your Service” is a phrase that we commonly use when we meet someone who is currently serving or did serve in the military. In New York State there are currently 5,500 members serving in the New York Army National Guard (this is not including NY Air National Guard, NY Coast Guard National Guard or Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard Reserves) As therapists how prepared or even willing are we to offer services to members of the military (active duty, Veterans, or their families)?  Is military service something we even ask about or discuss with the patients we are currently seeing? This workshop will provide a basic understanding of military structure, explore the reluctance of members of the military both active duty and Veterans to seek treatment, discuss the unique psychological issues presented by members of the military and their families The workshop hopes to assist therapists in being able to answer the question. “How Can I Help.” Participants will obtain a basic understanding of military structure-Active Duty, Reserves, National Guard, will have a better understanding of the unique emotional and psychological issues that members of the military and their families experience and will become familiar with resources for both their patients and themselves.

IMMIGRATION, CULTURAL BEREAVEMENT AND ITS IMPACT ON FUTURE GENERATIONS: WHAT CAN PSYCHOANALYSIS OFFER?
Instructor: Maria Laguna, LCSW
This two-session course will explore the vicissitudes of immigration (either forced or voluntary), with a special focus on cultural bereavement and its impact on first generation Americans. By drawing on several concepts of Object Relations theory and Critical Psychology, this workshop aims at helping clinicians identify some of the salient issues, unconscious processes and internal conflicts that tend to occur among immigrant and first-generation Americans. Clinicians will be introduced to theoretical and technical tools to help them identify aspects of cultural bereavement and unconscious processes that tend to be mobilized as a result of immigration. Students will identify aspects of cultural bereavement and ways to intervene analytically, will be able to name at least 3 unconscious processes that are mobilized as a result of immigration, and identify the impact of immigration and cultural bereavement in first generation Americans, and will learn analytic tools to facilitate the exploration of unconscious fantasies and unprocessed emotions.
